The clay tablet with the catalog number 322 in the G. A. Plimpton Collection at Columbia University may be the most well known mathematical tablet, certainly the most photographed one, but it deserves even greater renown. It was scribed in the Old Babylonian period between -1900 and -1600 and shows the most advanced mathematics before the development of Greek mathematics.

student4ever 07-10-2007 07:09 PM

just yesterday, I was wondering when this took place...

In the year 331 <small style="text-transform: uppercase;">bce</small>

Construction

At the direction of Alexander the Great, the Macedonian architect Deinokrates lays out the new city of Alexandria on the Nile delta in Egypt. Its central north-south and eastwest streets are each 14 m (46 ft) wide, dividing the city into four quarters, each with its own character. The plan is completed later by Ptolemy I, who joins several rocky islands and builds a long causeway to form two harbors set off by the famous Lighthouse of Pharos (named after the island on which it is built).

I had something to do at 3:45 yesterday and was trying to explain to my 6 year old daughter about it being a quarter to four... She's just starting to really understand money, so when I said a 'quarter' to four, she got confused since she knew I was talking about time...

This launched a 30 minute discussion about the difference between time and money and got into fractions... I think she was more confused afterwards and is now totally scared of going into the second grade... LOL

I was really late since it was then a quarter after 4 and that got her even more confused... :laughout:

DonMike 07-18-2007 03:34 PM

Wow, if it had been 3:46 you could have avoided the whole conversation. :laughout:
