Google toolbar - is it worth it?

I used to have the Google toolbar installed on my machine, but I found that it installed adware.

I liked the Google toobar for the pagerank information it provided, but I'm not sure if the trade off for getting adware is worth it or not. What are you thoughts on this?

I wonder if they make one for Firefox. I have it on IE but I never use it. Other than the pagerank feature I didn't really use the toolbar very much.

same here - I use it but no idea if it's worth it - but it does stop pesky pop up ads

I've never had adware installed by the toolbar, but now I'm on Firefox and use the Google Pagerank Status extension. Firefix already has a google search box (I use it a lot) and with the PR, it's got the best of both worlds. I only use IE for sites that aren't well designed.

Google toolbar

Hi everyone

I have not had or heard of Google installing any adware on the system.
Where did you find this information so we can protect our system also ?
Personally I couldn't do without it when I use IE these days but it doesn't happen everyday since I user Firefox most of the time.:bonk:

I love Googletoolbar for its page rank. I think there is an option when you install it. If you want the advanced features it will send "anonymous" information otherwise it doesn't sent anything

Evil Chris,
I happen to be a huge fan of Google, and before Firefox came out, I had Google toolbar installed in Internet Explorer. I happen to know that it does not install any adware. And it does a pretty good job of blocking pop-ups.

My suggestion to you though, is to download Firefox. Why bother with internet explorer any longer, it is loaded with security vulnerabilities that could lead to your computer being compromised. I mean, they had to release a security patch to prevent JPG images from installing a virus on your machine! And we look at quite a few JPG's!

So try out Firefox, You can download themes, customize it, it has extensions to do all sorts of things... like display your local weather, block advertisement servers and images, etc. www.getfirefox.com Let me know if you need any help with anything.

Thanks Thruma, do you use it? Do you have any feedback on it?

I use both and I like them better.

The PR thing actually shows a number and a green bar instead of just the green bar to indicate the pr.

I don't use the bar itself as much but you can check backlinks which can be usefull.

for firefox you have to install each separately
it's not all within the googlebar itself.

As far firefox itself goes. Just by using it you're miles ahead of anyone using IE in terms of protecting your computer.

I use firefox so ... :P

Gruntled 02-25-2005 03:12 PM

I use a Firefox extension called Search Status, which gives me 2 small bars at the lower right corner of firefox, one with the google pagerank in green (with the number), and blue bar for Alexa Pagerank.
