google ad words. are they worth it ?

what do you think of google ad words or Yahoo Sponsored Search ?
are they worth it and how much did you spend before you saw results ?
I heard that some people spend a ton of money without seeing a dime.
What has your experience been and was it really beneficial for you as a webmaster ?

my old boss used to do google adwords and he spent tons of money but never got any good results but some people say it's worth it.

I've heard that isn't worth it, might cost you more than you make.

I bought some last year for some specified niched paysites and was not too happy with the results... could have been worse tho...

if you're decided to do it and want to risk your $$ on it then you should start searching for some articles.

We have not had much luck with it at all.
There are far more effective methods to get targetted traffic.
