Thailand Couple With Creepy Passion to Wed

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - It was love at first sight for Thailand's Scorpion Queen and Centipede King. The couple with a soft spot for creepy crawlers - and publicity stunts - is planning a Valentine's Day's wedding at a haunted house, and to consummate their vows in a coffin.

Kanchana Ketkaew, 36, who set a world record in 2002 for spending 32 days in a glass cage with 3,400 scorpions, plans to wed 29-year-old Bunthawee Siengwong - who set a Thai record for enduring 28 days with 1,000 centipedes.

Kanchana's world record was beaten in 2004.

The couple met while performing their respective stunts at a snake farm on the resort island of Koh Samui, said Somporn Naksuetrong, the general manager of the Thailand's Ripley's Believe It or Not Museum, which is sponsoring the wedding.

The couple will tie the knot Feb. 14 in a group ceremony dubbed "Til Death Do Us Part" at Ripley's Haunted Adventure House, in the southern resort town of Pattaya, 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of Bangkok.

They will wear bloodstained wedding clothes and partake in a traditional Thai ceremony in which elders bless the couple with holy water, Somporn said. But instead of following Thai tradition and heading to a "wedding room" after exchanging vows, the pair plans to climb into a coffin to consummate their union.

I do wish them well, despite the fact that my skin crawled right out of the room the first time I read about the scorpion lady, when she broke the record.

When we moved to California, along with severe culture shock, we were presented with a whole new kind of "nature." Once upon a time, being afraid of spiders was a silly phobia. Out here...it's not. The first time I killed a Black Widow spider in my kitchen I knew we had a whole new ball game. We also have the Brown Recluse. One bit one of our dogs, causing a dog with four slender legs to have three slender legs and one huge abscessed one. (The vet did great work and she survived, leg intact.) That learning experience helped me save my own leg when I was bitten by a Brown Recluse. I have a nice scar and a story to gross people out with.

We don't have scorpions, but we do have the occasional rattlesnake.

At least we can see the Mountain Lions coming.

I really don't generally have a propensity for swear words, but I will say this....

THANK FUCKING CHRIST WE DON'T HAVE SCORPIONS UP HERE!

There, I said it.

As far as I know, scorpions don't much care for our climate.

Well, I guess I should tell you now that I'm an arachnophobe. I hate spiders, scorpions, worst--snakes.

MorganGrayson 02-02-2006 11:14 AM

I actually like snakes. They can be so very beautiful. I could never have one as a pet, though, because they eat live food. That was my one rule for the kids when they wanted pets: "no live food." (My husband nixed the youngest's request for a tarantula in a BIG way. He's afraid of spiders. So am I, but tarantualas are big and are more like "pets" than the things that occasionally crawl up the walls.)

I am very afraid of scorpions, though.

The caterpillers we have around here are just cute, fuzzy things that hang out until they turn into something else...which astounds me to no end.

That is actually pretty cool.....
