Smyth to the LEAFS!!!

i LIED.... But I'm expecting to see this headline on the 1st. Apparently it's between the Leafs & Calgary..... Leafs will get him... you just watch and see!

What are your thoughts Hockey fans.

Evil Chris 06-26-2007 01:29 PM

First thing I thought when I saw that title was FUCK OFF! LOL

Calgary getting him would be fuel to the Edmonton/Calgary rivalry fire!
But I could see him playing for Toronto!

I am seeing that www.fan590.com is saying that getting Paul Kariya is a good move.
I'm at a point where I think almost any move to shake up the order might be good.

Casa Nova 06-26-2007 01:38 PM

LOL I'd knew you would be the first to reply haha

If they get him it would certainly rejuvinate the spirit for TML again!! There is a huge possibility to get him, but if we do we may not have a shot at all the other huge free agents next season.... though you never know if Mats will come back. If we win the cup this year, which could be possible with the addition of a smyth type player, then he'll retire for sure.

After reading a few articles about the upcoming free agency market, I think that Toronto will either have Smyth or Kariya on their roster this fall.

More likely Kariya.

Platinum Chris 06-26-2007 02:43 PM

The real question is: What will they be giving up for either Smyth or Kariya. They simply do not have the cap space to sign either unless they get a trade deal. And with them being UFA's, there's no trade deals happenning on this.

Kariya is a more likely candidate to sign with the Leafs as he has expressed interest in the past in playing for them. But again, unless TO can free up $5mil minimum, they can't do shit to sign him.

Platinum Chris 06-26-2007 02:47 PM

And just to add some full #'s to the situation. The cap hasn't been publically announced yet, but it appears to be around $48 mil. Here is the Leafs current commitments:

12 Forwards: $20,411,000

1. Antropov
2. Belak
3. Bell
4. Devereaux
5. Kilger
6. Pohl
7. Ponikarovsky
8. Stajan
9. Steen
10. Sundin
11. Tucker
12. Wellwood

8 Defence: $20,829,328

1. Coliachovo
2. Gill
3. Kaberle
4. Kronwall
5. Kubina
6. McCabe
7. White
8. Wozniewski

2 Goalies: $3,375,000

Belfour's Buy-out: $770,000

SUB-TOTAL: $45,335,328

They still have Williams to sign under the RFA agreement, and he's set for a minimum of about $587k. That gives them ~$2mill to play with. They need 3-5 mil more to make a good run at a high prospect UFA

Casa Nova 06-26-2007 04:08 PM

hmm odd i come up with $43,888,100... where'd you get the extra 2 mill? I must be missing someone .. i shall go over my numbers.

Casa Nova 06-26-2007 04:15 PM

These are my numbers:
Forwards: $20,034,767.
Defence: $19,708,333. (Kronwall not incl. because most likely will start in minors)
Goalies: $3,375,000.
Buyout: $770,000.
Total: $43,888,100

Evil Chris 06-26-2007 04:49 PM

Whatever the numbers, the Leafs will have some new talent this year to be sure. I will leave the dollar figures to the GM, I just want to see bigger numbers in the WIN column. :xthumbs:
