For example, in Deep Purple's Smoke on the water, they mention "Frank Zappa and the Mothers".

Can anyone think of other instances like this?
I'm sure there are a ton of them.

Phish references both David Bowie and UB40 in their song called (duh) David Bowie.

I was gonna say that one too. Funny thing is I never listened to the lyrics well enough to even know what the song was really about. I only found out recently that they were dissing Neil Young.

Punk fans might remember a band called Local H.
They did a failrly popular song called "Eddie Vedder".
