Ms To Release "free Updates" To Xp In Months

Microsoft today announced plans to release updates for both Windows XP and Windows 2003 aimed at improving security. As we reported a week ago, Microsoft has decided that it's high-time to "secure the perimeter," that is, to focus on preventing exploits from getting to the OS to begin with. The new "Safety Technologies" will include a number of related initiatives, including updates to Windows 2003 Server Software Update System (SUS), an educational program, and a new and improved Internet Connection Firewall for clients.

The company promised to improve its built-in firewall feature, which has drawn criticism in the past because it was not especially strong and was routinely turned off in new copies of Windows. The update will automatically turn on the updated firewall and enable companies to centrally manage each computer's protective settings.

You can bet companies like Zone Labs, makers of the popular ZoneAlarm software firewall, are a bit worried.
