cost of living in montreal ?
Wondering if anyone has links to rentals or real estate for montreal .
Ideally i would like to know how much DOWNTOWN only :) Or if anyone can tell me roughly an idea how much rentals is downtown montreal . I think i may want to move there . Thanks |
Living off the island is the way you want to go. The cost of living is much less, plus there's some really nice areas. But, if you don't drive or have a car, you could have a problem in certain areas.
Downtown has some really cool areas as well. It really depends on exactly what you are looking for. Are you fluent in French? Are you looking for a loft, office space, 3½, 4½, 5½ ? There's pretty many Montrealers on the board. You should be able to get some good advice on the cost of living downtown and areas to avoid. No matter if you live downtown or off the island, it is still going to be a lot less expensive than living in Vancouver. |
For realestate rent or purchase check out www.MLS.ca
How much do you spend now? What is your budget? Will you have a car> Living downtown is nice and very convenient but as Panky said the costs are much higher than living off the island or in small suburbs (which are not necessarily off the island, but more like 10 minutes from the downtown area by car). That site should give you a good idea. |

Webgurl are you really considering moving to Montreal? Listen, if you need anything of want to talk please do not hesitate to call me (I sent you my phone number in PM) Never would I post my digits on the board my phone would be ringing off the hook! :p
Seriously, I've lived in Montreal most of my life and would be happy to help! :) |
I lived in Montreal for a while and you will find the cost of living 200% cheaper than Van, even if you were to live in the heart of the downtown it would still be cheaper than Van.

Hey guys thanks alot for the feedback
FB , when I make it there i will contact you forsure , right now I am thinking around spring time so i am just doing some research for the time being . Thanks for your support you are as sweet as your Avatar !!! Magnus , 200% cheaper what like a deal !! So instead of paying 1500/month for rent d/t Vancouver i can get a better deal in Montreal ??Sounds Fine and Dandy to Me ... |
1500 a month will buy you a kick ass loft in Old montreal ... :) ... Figure for the same amount as your rent you could get yourself a crazy pad and a little sports car .. :) With good winter tires

I have a 4000 + square foot loft on St Laurent and Mount Royal .
Maybe I can rent you some space. How long do you plan to stay ? |

I would be scared to live there alone ....:D Thanks Dugmor ! xoxoxoxo |
The previous "Budweiser loft" is for rent at the moment. It's a place with a mezzanine, that was rented for parties.
Visit www.canallachine.com and ask for Robin. Tell him it's J.-F. the porn photographer, that sent you. Avoid talking to John, he HATES porn and gets on my case all the time for my getting involved in it. That's what friends are for, I guess... :D |
How's that for options? LOL
Personally, if I were single and wanted to live downtown, I would look for something in the Ste-Catharine west area. Close to or even into Westmount. You have all the comforts of being downtown, and in a nice quiet area. Anything more than a few blocks away is an easy ride on the metro (subway). Living east of or on St-Laurent is just nuts IMO. |
City is definitely great cause everything is in walkable distance, but having a car in montreal is a pain! Summer is not too bad but winter... make sure you get a place that as either indoor parking or a private parking. otherwise it will be probably faster to walk to where you gotta go then to try and get your car and loose your parking space...lol

And then, there are other hidden costs of living in Montreal. Taxation is much higher, because we are taxed by both level of govt. The marginal rate is 65% maybe, and as for the services, they are very bad. Bad roads, bad hospitals (takes months to have an appointment), etc.
We live in the most socialistic province, and thus, where the business is the worst. If your revenue base and business is established somewhere else, then, go for it. If you think of brigning your business here, don't. |
ooooh ooooh ooohh...I love Montreal!!! My b/f's aunt is getting a place there so I'll be spending lots of time in Montreal next summer!:)
|
we are thinking of a trip next summer to Montreal, never been there. But I will wait for the snow to melt before I come =o)
|
I'm thinking of Montreal as the next big city I move to.
I got sick and tired of Toronto so moved out of there a while back. In a small town now. |
