It relates to Stuart Smalley's "Daily Affirmation". In an older Saturday Night Live show sketch, he made a spoof about people feeling good about themselves in which he would gaze at himself lovingly in a mirror and give himself a peptalk...followed by the words "...and doggonnit, people like me!"
