If she chooses the right man as her father, she wins the $100,000. If she chooses the wrong man, he gets the $100,000. Of course these people are going to agree to meet for the first time because $100,000 is at stake. It is really sad and pathetic. Then to share this "magic moment" with hundreds of thousands of viewers is lame as well. Talk about starting a relationship under false pretenses.
FOX knows people will tune in to see what happens. They will make the $100,000+ spent on each episode 100 times over.
How many people would agree to be a part of the show if the $100,000 was non existent? Some would agree to it because being seen on TV is important to them. Maybe for some, it will lead to them getting discovered or advance their career. Even still, I think a lot more people would think twice if the money was not offered.
