This one costs a little bit more than $850 but it is the best bang-for-your-buck notebook I've ever seen.
http://www.emachines.com/products/pr...Machines_M5309
It has things like widescreen display, CD burner and 802.11G wireless (not the slower 802.11b that everybody else has). Basically this notebook would cost double from any other manufacturer. Plus it looks wicked slick.
And I'm not saying this just cuz I own one!

I doubt you'll get anything kick ass for under 850.
I have to recommend a higher end Toshiba notebook. And it is because I have one. It's been nothing but GOOD and worth every penny.

Well, you can calculate (at least here in Switzerland) the price for a notebook that has the same qualities as a desktop in this ration
1 (Desktop) : 1.5x-2x (Notebook)

Really cheap notebook?
Try a Buffalo 8-1/2 x 11, spiral bound, 200 pages, with holes that fits a standard binder.
It'll set you off about 2.49$.
Don't forget a pencil and an eraser (the peripherials, you know...).

If you plan on keeping the computer for a longer period of time, then consider it a investment, and I think that when it comes to computers, its better to spend a little extra on it.
Toshibas new models are incredible, I love those..
They come in all kind of stripped down/beefed up versions, so make sure you check out each model in detail.
Sony got some good ones aswell.
Good luck!

Go for TOshiba satellite, you will have to put more money, but it will worth your investment. I just love my machine

really like my Dell Inspiron 5100, a little over $1,000, depending on what packages, software you get with it.
