Mine's about a year and a half old, so I could use a new one as well.
1000 Athlon, 24x burner 48x dvd, 512 ram x 2, 2 x 40 gigs hd, dsl and cable connections.
Buy a second hard drive fish and back everything up. Cheapest way to back things up and if you lose it once, you'll understand. I almost did but was able to get everything off of it.

You guys sound like you're running super-computers! FB and I are running two on a mini XP network. She uses a P4 1.2 with 256 and I'm running a laptop. Toshiba Satellite P4 1.6 with 256.
When I first started in this biz, I was using a 386 with 4 megs of ram, and a 105MB hard drive. LOL

I'm running a P4 1.6 with 256megs ram, 40gig HD, Burner, and Dual 17" monitors here in the office.
At home I use a P4 1.7 with 512megs ram, 40gig HD, burner, zip, and a 17" lcd flatscreen.
For music I use an Apple Powerbook Titanium 850mhz 512megs ram 40gig hd with an external 80gig firewire drive. The mac is faster then the PC, at least for the music aps.

I am running XP on a Dell 8250: Pentium 4, 2.7GHz, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, 40X burner, 16X DVDROM, RADEON 9000 Pro 128MG dual monitor graphics card, 19' and 21' monitors, .....oh...let's not forget the Wacom 4X6 tablet that Horg convinced me to buy a couple of years ago.
I bought it around Thanksgiving, and I think I am ready to upgrade already. hehehehe. I do run another machine next to this one as well, they are networked together. That is a 566 machine with 126 MB Ram, 20gig HD, etc.....I couldn't deal with it anymore and that is why I upgraded to the above machine.

We work on 2 PC's. We have a Home XP network setup. One PC is loaded with the Audigy sound card and configured for burning/mixing CD's, the other is built for graphics and business.

how do you setup a home XP network? i got an old computer and maybe if i can hook it up i can get more work done with 2 pc's.
anyway, what's the hardware i need? does that mean i have one internet connection for 2 pc's? does that mean i get 2 ip addresses?
help please..

Nice specs Chris !!
That is the reason I custom build .... we can put exactly what we want in it !!
my specs are :
Athlon 700 Thunderbird processor, not overclocked, but I am relentless in cache management, so it dances circles around most 1.4-1.5 Ghz boxes ... (as Mohammed Ali says, "It ain't bragging if it's true ...")
512 Mb of DDR RAM
40 GB Western Digital 7200 RPM HDD w/ 160 ATA
ATI RADEON 8500 dual head video card (128 MB on board memory)
Yamaha 16x CDRW
Pioneer DVD player
Cambridge Soundworks Dolby Digital 5.1 multibank soundcard
2 - Pro Series Viewsonic 19' PF790 CRT flat screens
and ADVENT WIRELESS SPEAKERS That I can listen to my MP3s or digital radio ANYWHERE around my house where there is a power outlet even out in the backyard ... the sound quality is AMAZING !!!

Here's my old case, changed it when the power supply started acting flaky. Got an Antec case, great box! This pic was taken at a Lan Party we did a while back.
The whole box was sanded down to the metal, then painted to have the outline of the wolf. It looks a lot better in real person, the flash ruins this pic.
As for the stats, it's a little old. AMD Duron 1.33, 192MB ram, GeForce 3 Ti500, SB Live!, 30GB HD, DVD, CD-R, using an OLD 15" monitor (using a 17" at the office), and Altec lansing ATP3 2.1 speakers.

I did the end of my university time (sounds like prison time, ain't it ? ) on a TRS-80 COCO-II hacked up to a whopping 64K ram, running VIP Writer on single side single density 5 1/4 floppies.
I now run an Athlon XP1700+ 256Mb ram, approx 70 Gb HD, GEForce 2 32MB. Screen: Diamond Pro, huge.
I have three fans in my case and it sounds like a jet engine. Darn noise !
In the summer, it overheated. I installed air conditionning in the house and now, it doesn't overheat.

I've got a relic from the prehistoric days . Behold a Pentium II Dell Dimension XPS 233 with 256 ram. She's an old lady about to die but I love her and she's great for just surfing. I also have a Mac G4 that I do all the heavy shit on like video editing and compression. I need a new PC but can't make a decision, go custom, or should I get another Dell they seem to hold up, I've had this babe since 97.

go custom.. that way, when something fucks up, you have no one to blame but yourself..
but i have to admit, i'm amazed at how you managed to maintain your PII...

Wow, this is gonna show the difference in age between us. I also had a TRS-80, but I was about 5 yrs old. My dad got the very first model, 4k of ram. Used to work with a cassette player. I still remember the command CLOAD BASEBALL and because the baseball game was at the end of the tape, I had to go through about 30 mins every time I wanted to play baseball.
