Default Popup Killers

What do you think about popup killers, and in particular, ones that are now being offered by adult entertainment affiliate programs?

A lot of programs have a certain amount of dependance on exit revenues, and what's more they figure in with plenty of traffic deals. So will these exit window killers ruin a lot of this?

I have been using Mozilla for a real long time, and for a while, it's had it's own popup killer.

So for the most part, I've been surfing the past year or so with no popups... I completely forget about them too.
I send links to friends saying "here, check this out" and then they complain that I sent them to popup hell. Oops.....

Popup killers seem inevitable to me now, cause everyone wants them... even the people making the $$ off of popups, want popup killers on their browser for their own surfing.

So eventually, people will have to find a new way to make their $$... and people always do.

running trade sites, I would never want to use anything that blocks pop ups... and doing gallery reviews... hmm I need to be able to see them...

but on the topic, I really don't think pop up killers can be good for the industry, and I do find it a little odd that adult affiliates would produce and sell them.

Ask any person involved within this industry that has any notable amount of traffic if exit consoles are a vital part of their revenue and you will, without a doubt, hear a definative "YES". In fact, I would think it is safe to say that most companies make 1/3 or more of their total revenue from their exit structures.

To think that any company out there would promote OR condone the developement or sale of a product like this is quite surprising. Any webmaster out there that is thinking past the "quick buck" aspect of the business definately would not consider promoting it. Who would want to promote something that could potentially make over 33% of your business disappear?

I don't know about you guys...but personally there is no way in hell I would or EVER will promote something that is going to eat into my bottom line, especially when it's such a short-term gain.

Yeah that'd be like an affiliate program packaging up a password hack script and selling it.

I haven't actually seen any of these, but I think I've heard tell. Earthlink has it on their television ads now, and frankly I wish I could turn it on ONLY when I visit non-adult portals like yahoo/msn, and when I'm surfing TGPs/CJ sites, heh. When I read the Times online now they have 'blanket' flash pops where it covers the entire page and has an X way up top, totally pisses me off when I'm in the middle of an editorial.

God bless the adult webmasters who try to make console-free ad pages, even if sponsors do rely on the exit hits.

C.

I agree. It's stupid to promote them.

On the other hand, I do use Mozilla's built-in pop-up blocker (which is better than any you can get for IE, by the way... only blocks the bad ones, and of the bad ones, it blocks them ALL).

If you're not using Mozilla... well, why not?

I dunno... there's better methods than exit consoles... there's better methods than popups... I think there are money making ideas waiting to be hatched, and it's quite possible that removing popup consoles will force people to come up with them.

There's always something better to be discovered.

Just a matter of time until IE and Netscape both have these pop-up killers as built-in features (probably with defaults to disable popups like they have already done to cookies). AOL is taking steps to disable (3rd party only, what do you know) popups in their quasi-IE incarnation.

So it's well past time that folks start thinking outside the box.

In the meantime, however, why further along the process by advertising popup killer programs on adult sites?

speaking as a proven "idea man" in this biz, I'll ask you this:
When was the last time a new contenent was discovered?
some times there's just nothing left to discover.

That said, we're completely unconserned by popup blockers but think its a completely stupid idea for money making businesses to advertise them.

I don't think there'll ever be an end to what we can discover... people said that movies could never get any better than vhs... some people, who actually knew... said that they'd never get any better than beta.
That was it... that's the best that it could ever be... just look at that quality!
And now we have DVD's... and people are saying that with quality that crisp... that's it. There's nothing left. But we all know, there'll be something new not to far off in the future.

If there was ever any industry in this entire world that I believe could rebound from any invonvenience... whether it be popup killers, or Visa.... it's the porn industry.

There is still lots to be discovered... and I think we are all the ones to do it.

What a thing to say. You say you're an idea man? Well bring some then. Sure there are no more continents to discover, and that's why exploration continues underground, sea, and in space.

I'll have to agree with Stuart that there are a ton of things waiting to be discovered.

I dont mind one popup. Or two, one blur and one popup. Its when people abuse them and throw you into a cj that sucks for the surfer.

From the webmaster point of view.. one popup with good traffic hands down makes a LOT of money..

When I was into popups seriously years ago I could sit there and change the size of a font and remove an image and watch traffic click through to my sponsors and make me another 300 bucks a day.

Popups are money makers.

Cool

You don't always know where a surfer is coming from. Most of them are looking for a number of different possible types of adult content.

Exits are just offering a different product to the surfer. If you are only offering one product /website you are missing tons of opportunities as a business.

Now...the Adult Industry has been known to abuse exits as with all good ideas. We might have to cut down a bit, but I know that as an Industry we'll figure out an alternative to exits eventually.

I’ve heard a lot of people talking about what surfers like and what surfers do not like. Of course surfers don't like popups. They are annoying but often the surfer will join something on that popup. Our industry is very new compared to most. If mainstream worried that much about the consumer they would never make a profit.

Would you ever expect a retail store to just sell one product "the one chair store, if you want anything else besides this chair the phonebook is over there?" A grocery store gives you one more chance when you leave to pick up some batteries, etc... When you are watching television you will take the time to see millions of dollars in paid advertising in the middle of your favorite episode of friends. Not everything is customer friendly, if it were, we would never sell anything.
