Who is going to Phoenix?
So this will be my first show ever and I'm kinda nervous about it as I don't know a whole lot of people.
So any one wanna take pitty on the show virgin and have a few drinks with me?
I can be rather witty with the right amount of booze in me. :P

I think you went to school with my kids!
(I tend to think that of everyone of a certain age dressed entirely in black. My kids were Goths and I knew some of the absolutely coolest, nicest Goth kids in the world. I wanted a t-shirt that said "Official Goth Mom," but my daughter never got around to having it made.)
But...I digress....
Rochard, darling, you're not only intelligent and funny, you're absolutely adorable.
Shane...at my very first convention I was so frightened I never even signed in. I just sat outside with my husband, holding his hand and praying my heart wouldn't slam through my chest. ("Agoraphobic Road Trip" was what we called that little adventure.) Then...I ran into a couple of labeled people I knew via email who gave me a little job to do that involved handing things out...and I met the immediate planet. Every single one of them was nice to me and the fear left. I've been to a kazillion conventions since then. Everyone is labeled and meeting people is the easiest thing in the world. Just read their name badge, make sure yours is showing...and walk up with a big smile and your hand out for a shake. (Don't worry about ever repeatedly introducing yourself to the same person, either. I had one webmaster who introduced himself to me three times over the years. I never told him he'd done that, either. I know damned well I'd done it, too.) Also remember always that most of the people around you haven't met each other in person, either, and they're probably *all* nervous. I want to make it to Phoenix and I haven't been to a convention in years. I have something new to worry about and I've been repeatedly told it's silly. This will be the first convention - if I can go - that I will be in my wheelchair. I feel more than a little awkward about running into people that knew me when I was able to walk around. Luckily, all of the people I want to meet in Phoenix are people I've never met in person before. I've known Evil Chris virtually since dinosaurs ruled the internet but I do not believe we've ever met in person.
I talk about this in public like this because when I read my own posts it does indeed look like a pretty stupid thing to worry about...and that helps. It ain't easy bein' me sometimes...but I know I make it harder than it has to be by worrying.

Morgan,
Thanks for the encouraging words. I feel much better knowing I'm not the only one who got nervous at their first convention. I hope that you are able to go and we can meet up for a drink or some thing.

I remember my first real convention. It was in Vegas at the Tropicana, a smaller show. I think Platinum Bucks put it on. Steve Lightspeeed, Tanker, and myself drove our bikes up from Phoenix.
So there I was the first night drinking in the Platinum Bucks Penthouse suite. Steve and Tanker seemed to know everyone there. No one knew me and no one gave a shit. I tend to be a bit shy but that night I refused to let it get the best of me. That night I decided that when I left the room, everyone would remember my name.
I came up with a plan and found a willing model. We both got drunk and started eyeing up the hot tub in the bedroom. We filled up the hot tub with water and bubbles, stipped down, and got in. What I didn't think about was that the room was filled with about sixty people, all of whom had cameras. Then another girl got into the tub with us.
When I left the room that night, everyone knew who I was. And the pictures are still up someplace on FUBAR.
How in the world I explained this incident to my wife I have no idea, but now the rule is "no nudity" at shows.
My point is.... You have to have some kind of a gimick to stand out from everyone else. For reasons I still can't understand everyone seems to think I'm "Mister Jager". During Phoenix Forum last year I was sporting a small bottle of jager in my cargo pants pocket at all times. And now people bring me gifts of jager.
Seems to have worked well for me.

Shane...there's only two kinds of webmasters. Those who are nervous at their first conventions...and those who lie and say they aren't.
Rochard...you're absolutely right about a "gimmick." My own personal "gimmick" is that I actually look like a PTA Mom. That makes me very approachable. Nervous people felt perfectly comfortable approaching me and introducing themselves. I liked that. It gave me the confidence to walk up to other people and introduce *my* self.
It's also amusing as hell being a portly, middle-aged PTA Mom who writes hardcore porn. Watching the faces go from "Omigosh I just love your stories!" to "I just told somebody's MOM I loved their fuck stories IMGONNABURNINHELL!" is a kick! (This is why "never judge a book by its cover" got to be such a popular saying. I don't think the originator intended it for me...but I certainly get a lot of mileage out of it.)
Rochard again...I do indeed envy you your comfortable attitudes toward many and varied things. For a pornographer, I have a remarkable collection of hangups that are awkward at times. I hate. loathe and despise having my picture taken - I take a miserable picture, always have - and for some reason, many people have wanted to have me photographed with my arm around a nearly naked human. I remember that film "What Do You Say to a Naked Lady?" a lot at those moments...and realize that what I personally do is stammer. (The best time I had was when I remembered I had a sense of humor. I looked a model up and down and said archly "you could put somebody's eye out with that." Luckily for me, I got a bright, intelligent, witty model who cheerfully offered to...well, never mind. Great lady, though. It was a pleasure to meet her.)
