Inlaws can be...a problem.
We got lucky. We could say "your family is crazy and so is mine."
However, and oddly, I'm much closer to my inlaws than I am my own family. Once my mother passed, the family sort of fell apart. She was the glue that held it all together. I'm also way out here on the Left Coast, and they're all on the right.
So are my inlaws, but my mother-in-law sends me emails all the time.
When we got married we read an article about the five things couples fight about. Sex, money and inlaws I remember. (The other two I forgot a long time ago.) My husband and I took a "sacred vow" never to fight about those five things...and we never did. That resulted in us never fighting about anything for 26 years.
I always knew that my parents could sit in my house and never comment on a thing or give me advice - unlike my mother-in-law, who has an opinion on everything. I also knew that if I needed help, all I had to do was call my mother-in-law, who lives in Pennsylvania, and she'd be on a plane ready to help out - unlike my own parents, who left my husband alone with two small children while I was in the hospital because "they couldn't handle the stress."
I've come to the realization that everybody's family is screwed up in one way or another. Some just have screw ups that are easier to live with.
