Default What Are Canadians Proud Of? Angus-Reid Poll Shows...

http://angusreidstrategies.com/index...ews&newsid=256

According to a recent poll conducted by Angus-Reid, when it comes to all things Canadian the sight of the Maple Leaf flapping in the wind stirs the strongest feelings of pride in people from coast to coast, with 86 percent of respondents putting the flag at the top of the list.

The armed forces came a close second at 80 percent and hockey was the third most popular part of Canadiana that made 71 percent of the 1,000 respondents feel most proud to be a Canuck.

But some of the more traditional aspects of the Great White North didn't rank so high on the list, including Parliament (32 percent) the Queen (36 percent) and the justice system (42 percent).

The levels of pride in Canuck institutions varied widely from province to province. Positive emotions toward the flag were pretty much a given across the country, but there was much more support for the armed forces in the Western provinces.

When it comes to hockey, Alberta and Quebec showed the most pride for the national sport and 80 percent of younger Canadians reported stronger feelings of patriotism watching the puck drop as opposed to 72 percent of Canucks between the ages of 35 and 54.

There are a number of Canadian institutions that sit in the middle of the road when it comes to stirring strong emotions, including health care (50 percent), aboriginal culture (51 percent), bilingualism (52 percent), multiculturalism (61 percent) and the economy (62 percent).

The Dominion Institute released the results of a similar survey that suggests the Maple Leaf is the greatest source of pride for Canucks followed by hockey and our national flag.

And a third survey of Canadian patriotism suggests the majority of Canadians are very proud to live in the Great White North.

A Harris-Decima survey asking Canadians to rank their pride in their country on a scale of one to 10 found that 57 percent gave their home and native land the highest ranking.

A quarter of the 1,000 respondents gave it an eight or nine and only three percent ranked their level of pride at a five or lower.

Across the country, Albertans showed the most pride while Quebecers expressed the least, but only a small number of Quebecers ranked their pride lower than five.
