How to bypass automated phone systems

I find that most times when I key in # or * 0 a few times I seem to goto the switchboard. Then after redirection of my call to the correct department the wait seems to take longer than if I was to select the required number in the first place though.

It could be the time of day when I use such service that increases wait time.
