FB, congrats. I know I don't need to tell you this but remember to let him know you're proud of him even when he doesn't get medals. I know it sounds silly but kids can get their egos crushed so easily.
And Morgan, how wonderful that you took that boy in. Have you heard from him lately? Do you know how he's doing? That story made me cry. I hate seeing children treated badly. It just breaks my heart.

Don...Yes, I hear from him all the time. He's doing very well.
My life was like that. Some kids bring home puppies...my kids always brought home other kids. A *lot* of teens logged time on either my couch or my floor, depending on how much room we had at any given time.
So many parents seemed to consider their kids disposable once they grew out of the "cute" ages. I happen to like teenagers and work well with them. I learned to handle just about anything, from pregnancy scares ("If your fucking parents kick you out, you'll come live with me, so relax") to the amazing amount of "cutters" I knew. Thankfully - I know that sounds odd, but believe me, I was thankful - I scar like a bitch so I could just hold out my arms and say "no, I KNOW what I'm talking about here, kiddo." I had a credibility that other adults lacked in that rather scary area.
Children, teenagers and adults all need the same thing: somebody to listen. That's it. Just...listen.
