Lightbulb New rules allowing "spam" on boards

Your thoughts on the following please...
I think boards (like XNations and the others) should allow people to announce their sites and services freely.
What is regarded today as "spam" is actually an addressing to appropriate audience . We are webmasters after all and if someone here has something to offer other webmasters shouldn’t he be allowed to do so??

I think a relaxation of the rules observed on most boards would result in letting every scammer, schemer and bottom-feeder come out of the woodwork and make most boards useless. Many boards have spam forums, and while I've never seen any #s I'll bet they get read. If you're clever at all you can probably find a way to work your service into a related thread. If you are a routine contributor to a board, you usually get a little more leway on self-promotion than the drive by spammers do. There is only one board I can think of where spamophobia rules (for anyone except a select few); the rest seem to do a pretty good job of showing an appropriate balance.

If you are a normal contributor to the board then you normally don't run into problems.

But those spam threads are for just that! Only down side is nobody surfs the spam forum daily :P

Almost noone reads/posts in the secondary forums.
and I'm not talking about spamming "buy my penis enlagrement pills", I'm talking about something like "I am a lawyer moving into the adult business"..
Indeed sigs are for that in a way but so many people are jumpy about analyzing others posts and mistake remarks like "I have a solution for your problem, use my image compression services" as spam and not as information and help.

I'm all but for one rule: the owners of the board decides whatever suits them and fits their fancy.

Boards are operated at somebody's expense. They are not public. Take it or leave it.

That matters none
What you say is a knowen fact BUT what I am asking is - is that logical.
Boards were initially created for people to ask questions, get answers, mingle and share information. Getting the word out is part of the game. If someone has a problem, WHY DOES LETTING HIM KNOW OF ALTERNATIVES AND NEW THINGS IS REGARDED AS SPAM?

I don't think you're going to get called for letting someone know you may have a solution to their problem. Where you might get called is if you respond to someone with a problem resizing images by offering them your content or design services.

Some boards are more touchy than others. You can beat your head against a brick wall, go someplace else and forget the board, or you can become a contributing member - usually that gives you a lot more leeway.

I personally like to see announcements. There are only so many hours in the day...so it's nice to be able to check the boards and get industry updates along with all the fun. All of you know as well as I do that you would be better off walking outside your office or home and screaming your announcement to anyone that would listen than posting in the announcement forum. Nobody goes there...and they never will.

On the other hand, nobody ever likes the guys that stops by your party, drink the beer, eat the food and leave without even introducing themselves. At least make an effort to post and become part of the community before posting your press releases.

I cant stand unrelated spam.

If someone asks for advice or suggestions, go right ahead. but without spam rules, most boards would become useless...

In addition to the points already made.

Would be an idea for people who actually DO want to spam to have a place where this is acceptable for instance our site http://www.spamboards.com

Hehe, i just couldnt resist, sorry folks but it IS relevant to the conversation

But seriously, a lot of boards are now becoming less spam tolerant, i know on European Webmasters i have made the forums completely spam free and have actually directed people in the direction of the Spam Boards site above.

There are a few regular posters on the site but traffic is always a good thing, hence more is needed.

The one MAJOR problem that may be encountered though, if people were allowed to spam general resource boards would be that the overall affect of the usefullnes of the board itself may be come diluted resulting in fewer return visitors and posters thus driving the marketable value of the forum down lower.

Business is business regardless of whether its spam or not, there HAS to be a form of modicum.

Regards,

Lee

Im not talking only about announcements but even about responses to posts.
For example I have many cases where people ask something like
"I'm looking for a goot trade script, what do you think? which is better TM1, UCG or CGU?" And when I say something like "Can I offer an alternative? Take a look at TTTManner" - some smartasses come and say - "This is SPAM stupid - take your shit elsewhere - he was asking about TM1, UCG or CGU!"
I think its stupid. Like BobbyR said, we need to get our news somewhere and I for one hate to go and read full featured articles in resource sites since those are many times politically arranged

=-=-=SPAM-=-=-
P.S.
Names of trades scripts as well as the name of the best traffic management service was changed to keep the privacy of the participant
