How Comic Book Art Is Done
How Comic Books Are Done
Okay, in the next few days I'll post a page of artwork here that shows how comic book artwork is done.
I used to draw a comic book called 'Bloodshot' for Acclaim Interactive's Valiant Comics.
A fan sent me an email asking for some original art and since he's been such a long time fan who even put up a website dedicated to my stuff I said I'd do it.
Comic book art is very specialized. We do it on paper that's 10"x15" in width and height. We use two types of pencil and then the work has ink put on it to preserve it and make clarity for the coloring and printing.
Here's the cover to one of the Bloodshot books I wrote and illustrated:
Bloodshot was a story about a mobster hit man who gets captured by evil scientists who use microsopic computers to enchance his strength and control electronic devices at a distance. It also wiped out his memory so he becomes a killing machine and when his memory begins to come back he turns on his captors and fights other assassins like himself.
You guys can see some of the comic books I've done at my mainstream site:

It was fun doing this book and writing the story. I still get fanmail to this day.

Thanks! I have to try different approaches to getting surfers to convert. My next trick is a mini comic book where I interview other pornmeisters and embedd links in the artwork to their sites.

Greg I aspire to do what you do, only as a hobby! I love your work.
I'm "tooning-up" my sites with the more abstract toon look hoping they will appeal to more viewers.
My avatar was created with Poser (3d model is David with some muscle morphs applied) and Adam Wrights Toon Actions2 (from renderosity.com).
I do not have the skills to draw a proportional figure with the Wacom tablet yet but just this week picked up a copy of "The Big Book of Cartooning" by Bruce Blitz and Betty Edwards "Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain" (and companion workbook). At 41 years of age I have not drawn since 1984 and it feels really good to be getting back into it.
I'll be staying tooned to your website.
:-)

Terraangel, your work is excellent! I love the Werewolf.
Greg, what software applications do you use?
I'm learning Illustrator through Lynda.com starting with their CS3 one-on-one 9 hour program, then I'll tackle the 17.5 hour course.

Thanks Buddha!
Actually I use some very, very advanced software. One of them is a massive computer system. Processing power is off the scale and memory is endless. It's called my mind
I use advanced tools for drawing too, a pencil and some paper.
The reason I'm emphasizing these is because all the computer software in the world cannot replace 'you'. 'You' are the best artist you can be. The computers and software are just decorations you use to enhance your art.
Lotsa guys get 3D software and other software and their stuff looks just like that, computer generated. Old fashioned sketching and drawing enhance everything else. Even at the big studios the best CG guys are people who spend the time sketching and drawing.
I don't use any CG or 3D software, I use only the basic things like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro for coloring and that's about it.
The Paint program is attractive but when it comes to painting I'd rather use good old fashioned water color paints or oil paints. Not that I haven't seen some awesome work done with the program but I'm old fashioned that way.

Now here's how we do comic book pages. Pardon the fact my scanner doesn't accomodate the size of these things which is 10"x15". Wherever you see pencil, is where ink is later applied for printing and preservation. A comic book 'penciller' is the anchorman of the team. He's director, actor, costume designer, set designer, lighting, stunt coordinator all rolled up into one. Quite a prestigious position when done successfully.
This poster is for a fan of mine from the Bloodshot comic book series. The woman in the background is Bloodshot's 'woman' aka the Death Angel. They are empowered with microscopic nanites, machines, that give them super strength and agility, basically killing machines. A fun book series to work on.
