what's most important on exit consoles?
is it design/layout, images vs.text, small/big, number of affiliates ?
Ultimately it depends on the reason for the exit (traffic or sales), but
what are your opinions on what works or doesn't when it comes to exits?

I've been actually thinking about this and looking around at everyone's different consoles. The ones on our amateur sites always seems to have done well for us. http://www.amateurhomepages.com (popup hell). But I'm trying to come up with something different/better for the sites in Purecash when we launch.

Luke, do you think using multiple pops has done better for ya than using just one console or?

Well I don't know if this is the BEST way to do it. But I like to go to 1, maybe 2 pops.
The first one filters out the niches. I put as many internal links as possible. Meaning if I the console is on a site of mine, and someone clicks on amateurs, then I'll send them to my amateur pay site. If it's a category that I dont' have, then I'll send him to a sponsor.
The 2nd console, if I use it, is for free sites. so email confirmation sites or even maybe TGPs if I'm selling it.

When the surfer gets hit with exit popups, they need to feel like they are still within the boundaries of the site they left, or at least being sent to something just as interesting.
If they just get a ton of windows opening before them, they'll get pissed. The worst are the timed windows that pop up 30 seconds after they are long gone. My conversions on these have been horrible.
While I was working at Gamma, I re-designed their exit system and from one month to the next I more than doubled their exit revenues.
Great exit strategies are set up in a non-intrusive way (at least they need to feel that way), well thought out signup trades, and a feel for the niches involved. I think that last one is obvious. Your very last window should be sent to something like 4freebucks.

Listen to this man! The green 4freebucks exit that he designed back when he worked at Gamma is still the best converting exit of all time a year and a half later.

We always kept the first popup mostly internal to our other amateur sites, thumbs of them all w/ short description. All the following pages are mostly site in other programs and then the last page is our own 4free sites. But those have popups too so its quite a few.
I'm probobly going to stick to 3-4 popups on the sites in our new program. Thanks for the feedback y'all. Definitely helps.

there's a few other things no one has mentioned, like...
1) design - what's best? text/banners/images , banners - what size... ?
2) multiple pops and or scripts - pop-under vs. pop-up? close on exit
scripts or links that don't pop when click, etc.
3) what size, full page, small pops, centered, resizeable, no close, etc.
