Porn Bill Withdrawn In State Senate For Further Study
Last Update: Mar 20, 2007 12:59 PM

A state senator has withdrawn for now a bill to cut the sales tax on food by imposing a hefty levy on pornography.
Senator Dewayne Bunch of Cleveland said he wants to become more familiar with the measure before working it through Senate committees.
Under the original plan, there would be a 25 percent tax on adult video stores, escort services, adult movie rental and pay-per-view subscriptions and on magazines, books and other adult materials. The measure would also charge "adult cabaret" performers an annual $400 occupational privilege tax.
Bunch stressed that the Senate version is only temporarily on hold.
State Representative Stacey Campfield of Knoxville is sponsoring the bill in the House.
Hmm, I think this is out of Tennessee. 25% is pretty hefty for an already dwindling DVD/Video retail market. Anyone know if this would be charged to online retailers in that state or have to be charged by online retailers for purchases from that state?

The cost of litigating what is or is not adult material would be twice whatever the tax would bring in. They would have to bring in every escort agency on the planet and prove they were providing an adult service.... most of those agencies are the same people who send out clowns to kid's birthday parties under another "department" of their company. hehe
