Question Greatest Rock Bands by decade

What do you think? This is purely opinionated...
There are a ton of great bands, but these stood out for me in their respective decades....

1960s - The Who
They entered into rock music by promptly shocking Brits with their on stage antics. They were the first ones to destroy their set and their instruments. Countless bands copied them and tried to be just like them. None of them succeeded.

1970s - Led Zeppelin
The local rock station here plays them so much that I can't hear them anymore, but there's no denying them. My Mom was a huge fan, and it got passed on to me. I remember listening to "Led Zepellin II" on 8-track with headphones on when I was about 7 years old and wondering why that guy was crying so loud during "Whole Lotta Love"...

1980s - U2
You can't argue with the massive amount of records they have sold. Not to mention the incredible worldwide tours they've done. My first U2 album was "War". I couldn't believe it when I listened to it for the first time.

1990s - Stone Temple Pilots
Most might go.. "wha?" to this one, but I just think that everything they released to date has been spectacular. At any given time, I have an STP CD in the car. Hard to pick a favourite CD, but "Tiny Music..." comes to mind as one that's amazing from the first track to the last.

I'll have to say my favorite rock band of the 90's would have to be 311. I never really got into STP when they first came out but I like most of their stuff now.

Those two are good ones too. I don't think I could pick just 1 greatest band of all time. I love music. Its like food to me, if its good, I eat it!

I'm definitely blown away by innovative bands, that's how I gauge best.

60's I would say Jimi Hendrix cause you know he has a cock

70's is not my era, but I love the Clash

80's Pixies, no doubt

90's Radiohead and Jeff Buckley

today? don't know

i'm so not that mainstream but i've been in love with Bono since i saw him give an interview on the New Music when i was 10 years old, so i'm sticking with U2 for 80's and 90's. 70's I was kinda young.... but what i've retained from the 70's that really sticks out is Pink Folyd. What will it be this decade? Someone shoot me if it's Eminem or something! lol

I'm not 100% sure about this fact, but I think I heard that the first time Pete Townshend destroyed his guitar was an accident. They were playing in a small room where the ceiling wasn't that high (like a bar or a pub) and at some point he jumped and the end of his guitar hit the ceiling and everybody yelled "yeaahh" or something like that.

Hmmmm...

60's yeah I can go with The Who for sure.

70's...yep.. Led Zep ..Rush is there too..Stones!!

80's - U2 is my music memory from the 80's without a doubt..

90's...is a real tough call.. Nirvana.Pearl Jam.Sound Garden..Alice in Chains...Sonic Youth...tool. good thing Core by STP came out at this time.. Who has the longevity factor and consistantly making good albums, for sure it's STP. Who shaped the rock of the 90's Nirvana for music composition..Pearl Jam for bringing back good song structure and lyrics.

Now every new rock band is 3 cords power rock or the Eddie Vedder school of vocals.

I went on a US tour as road manager for a band out of Toronto..they played in almost every major city in the US from Boston-NYC-Hollywood and all points in between..I saw a hundred bands from everywhere on that trip..not much original happenin.

50's - Buddy Holly, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry

60's - pretty tough to name just one- Hendrix, Doors. The Who, The Stones, The Beatles

70's - another tough decade - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, BOC, Aerosmith

80's - beginning of the end - The Clash, Van Halen

90's - will R&R survive - Nirvana, STP

00's - Cake, Ozzie ( I know they are not really 2000, but only the strong survive)

EC, your mom is into Led Zeppelin? is she available by chance?

Even though they are not really a Rock band, Nine Inch Nails has been pretty influencial in the 90's.

i personally don't see how you guys like U2 so much, i praise them for their talent and what not but i just can't get into that syle of music...

for the 90s, I would like to submit the Smashing Pumpkins.

power-rock geniuses.

Their drummers is the greatest drummer of all time. Shows what you can do as a rock drummer when you have Jazz influences. (if you dont believe me, listen to Geek USA from their siamese Dream album.)

also, from the montreal region, Grim Skunk. Had they been american, they would have been a major band. ....but they're not, so they will stay one of quebec's best kept secret.

Shoot..I missed REM they would be a late 80's-90's pick for me as well. I really like Smashing Pumpkins..and NIN but not enough to make my picks.

Hmmm please listen to Rush, Primus and the Chili Peppers before making such a bold statement.

Kid Rock
Umm I know music is a personal thing and the beauty of this list is everyone will have a different pick...but Kid Rock Should not be even close to the names in this thread.
