A California couple and their company have been indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly distributing obscene materials in what federal authorities said would be a series of prosecutions after nearly a decade of lax enforcement.

Robert Zicari and Janet Romano, both of Northridge, and their company, Extreme Associates, were indicted for allegedly distributing three videos to the Pittsburgh area through the mail and over the Internet, U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan said today.

Buchanan said lack of enforcement has led to the proliferation of violent and degrading images such as distributed by Extreme Associates. One of the videos depicts rape and murder, she said.

Obscenity is not protected speech under the First Amendment, she said.

Authorities raided Extreme Associates in April and took videos and financial records, she said.

Zicari and Romano, who also go by the names Rob Black and Lizzie Borden, have not been incarcerated but have surrendered their passports and must appear at an arraignment hearing in Pittsburgh on Aug. 27.

Court documents did not name an attorney for Zicari and Romano and they could not immediately be reached for comment. Home phone listings could not be found for them and a telephone call by The Associated Press to Extreme Associates and an e-mail were not immediately answered.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of 50 years in prison and a $2.5 million fine for Zicari and Romano and probation and a $5 million fine for the company, Buchanan said.

Because the movies in which they got busted for also include hardcore pornography. When you mix the 2 of em, you get problems. Porn is already facing issues of obscenity.

Also, these weren't movies that were just made. If I remember right, the movies in question were made last year.

To be honest I think they deserve what they get. You can't get much more disgusting than the stuff they apparently make. And the stupidity... Apparently the bust came about because they were in a documentary thing on PBS Frontline and described the action in the video in detail. Morons.

As far as whether or not it's different than a regular Hollywood movie... Of course it is. Most people don't sit and jackoff to Dirty Harry.

the fundamental problem here is that in a mainstream movie, typically, rape is not glorified. When you are pushing a movie through the XXX channels and include RAPE and Death as the theme, it will become seen as an association which will please the church to no ends. They have been trying to associate porn with rape for years, and now Mr. Black IS associating it, fake or not.

It is a stupid move in today's climate. Whether the movie is a year old, a week old or a 100 years old, he was still distributing it and it was a stupid move.

Sure we need envelope pushers to get realistic laws in place, but this shit is just stupid. Do you really want Porn associated with death and rape? I sure as hell don't.

Extreme Associates is a major player in the Video market,
Their library consists of hundreds of VERY popular films & lines..

Anyone who thinks that this bust happened solely because of those two movies cited in the press release is deluding himself! Other osbcenity charges are coming, they pick the easiest to nail so the precedent is set to mass prosecute afterwards.

What is considered obscene in the USA varies from community to community, meaning you don't have to have death or rape to get nailed, oral sex is considered illegal & obscenity in many states, and as soon as they get a few prosecutions they'll get more daring.

Have you seen this video? The rape is hardly glorified. If you're judging the video based upon not seeing it, you're no different than those who protest everyone else's movies, music and videos that they themselves haven't seen.
