I read a Darwin award that was almost exactly the same (maybe it was the same guy).

My favourite Darwin were the two guys that bought a surplus jet engine and attached it to their pickup truck. Apparently it took the cops a while to figure out what happened because all that was left was a smear down the middle of the highway.
