I've never been a news watcher/reader. It depresses me aweful. However, I do like knowing what's going on. So, instead, I do two things to stay informed...
In the 45 minutes in the morning that I'm awake, getting our son off to school, I watch CNN. I can get a quick look at what's going on, without a lot of the in-depth "fear-throwing" looks into how aweful our world is lately. Just get the highlights and leave the depressing parts out, thank-you-very-much-time-to-get-on-with-my-life-now news.
Secondly, I watch "The Daily Show", with Jon Stewart.
If I've gotta listen to depressing stuff, I might as well do it with him. He's incredible at taking the sad (or often-times stupid) shit going on and at least helping us cope.
