The terrible vision of the future that we gets in SciFi is not the result only of industry, but the result of corrupt businessmen AND corrupt politician (the one who controls the legitimated use of violence).
No world à la MadMax / Terminator / etc could be made possible without politicians, because nobody of private industry would develop it on a private initiative.
Govts are infinitely more violent than private individuals.
